What are the phenomena of rust on steel structures and what hazards does it cause?

 1. Rust on steel structures can be divided into three types:

① Light rust: Pitting corrosion appears on the surface, and some parts develop oxide scale.

② Moderate rust: Bright red rust spots and some oxide scale cracks.

③ Heavy rust: Oxide scale peels off, and the oxide layer increases. Some thick oxide layers can cause the steel structure surface to sink.

2. The main hazards caused by rust on steel structures:

① Stainless steel structures will have reduced load-bearing capacity and affect structural stability.

② Stainless steel structures will increase maintenance costs.

③ Rust on steel structures will shorten their service life.

If steel structures are not regularly maintained and treated in a timely manner, rust stains and oxide scale will increase the corrosion and rust rate of the steel structure, which will not only affect the service life of the steel structure but also create potential safety hazards.

3. Effective methods for dismantling steel structures:

① Manual rust removal: Using tools such as manual scrapers, lubricating cloths, and wire brushes to remove rust from steel structures. However, this method is inefficient and does not completely remove rust.

② Mechanical Stool: This method uses a motor to remove rust from steel structures. However, it cannot remove stubborn oxide coatings, and the metal layer of the steel structure itself is easily damaged.

③ Chemical Rust Removal (Neutral Rust Remover): Chemical rust removal primarily involves using a rust remover (neutral rust remover) to react chemically with the rust, peeling off the oxide scale from the steel structure surface to achieve rust removal. Neutral rust removers are preferable to acidic rust removers as they completely overcome the disadvantages of acid mist damaging the substrate.

Using neutral rust removers for steel structure rust removal has advantages such as low cost, simple operation, and thorough rust removal. Neutral rust removers are suitable not only for steel structures but also for steel components and on-site reinforcing steel.

Therefore, proper rust removal for steel structure buildings is of great significance for the development of steel structure buildings and reducing environmental pollution. Furthermore, if long-term use is required without major surface maintenance and long-term coating protection, the service life can reach approximately 20-30 years, with lower maintenance costs and significant economic benefits.
