What are the types of steel structures?

Steel structures are structures made of steel materials and are one of the main types of building structures. The structure mainly consists of components such as beams, columns, and trusses made of steel sections and plates, and uses rust removal and prevention processes such as silanization, pure manganese phosphating, water washing and drying, and galvanizing. The components are usually connected by welds, bolts, or rivets. Due to its light weight and simple construction, it is widely used in large factories, stadiums, and high-rise buildings. According to different classification standards, steel structures are classified as follows:

1.Steel structures are classified into four types according to their uses: tall steel structures, plate and shell steel structures, industrial plant steel structures, and light steel structures.

2.Tall steel structures: Tall structures include television towers, microwave towers, communication towers, high-voltage transmission line towers, petrochemical towers, atmospheric monitoring towers, rocket launch towers, travel observation towers, drilling towers, exhaust towers, water towers, chimneys, etc., and most tall structures use steel structures. The 336m-high Heilongjiang TV Tower is currently China's tallest steel-structured multi-functional TV tower. Many other steel towers of the same type, ranging from 200 to 300m, also exist. Large steel mast structures built in China during the 1960s and 70s include the 200m Guangzhou TV Tower, the 210m Shanghai TV Tower, the 194m Nanjing Yangtze River transmission line tower, and the 325m Beijing environmental and climate mast. The 212m Shantou TV Tower and the 260m Daqing TV Tower, completed in 1990, are also steel structures. The most numerous and widespread tall structures are communication towers and transmission towers. With the development of information and power, these steel towers around 50m in height will become ubiquitous across China.

3. Plate and Shell Steel Structures: Plate and shell steel structures are used for sealed containers, such as large oil depots, gas storage facilities, and furnace shells. They are also used for blast furnace structures that require the ability to withstand large internal forces and rapid temperature changes, as well as large-diameter, high-pressure oil pipelines. Some large hydraulic structures, such as ship lock gates, are also plate and shell structures. 3. Steel Structures for Industrial Plants: Steel structures are typically used as the load-bearing framework for heavy workshops, such as open-hearth furnace workshops, primary rolling mill workshops, and blast furnace workshops in metallurgical plants; casting workshops, hydraulic press workshops, and forging workshops in heavy machinery plants; slipway workshops in shipyards; assembly workshops in aircraft manufacturing plants; and roofs and crane beams for other large-span workshops in other factories. Many workshops in several well-known metallurgical complexes in China, such as Ansteel, Wuhan Iron and Steel, Baotou Steel, and Shanghai Baosteel, have adopted various designs of steel structure workshops. Humid press workshops in the Shanghai Heavy Machinery Plant and the Shanghai Jiangnan Shipyard also have large steel structure workshops.

4. Light Steel Structures: Light steel structures typically refer to structures welded from round steel, small angle steel, thin-walled steel, or thin steel plates. The advantages of light steel structures are their light weight, low cost, high degree of prefabrication in manufacturing, minimal on-site installation work, and fast construction speed. They also have an attractive appearance, spacious interior, and high building area and space utilization, making them highly competitive in the construction market. In recent years, lightweight steel structures have developed rapidly in China, and their application has expanded from industrial plants, small and medium-sized houses, stadium grandstand canopies, and small warehouses to residences and villas.
