Design of Large-Scale Public Buildings: Soccer Stadium
The Volgograd Football Stadium in Russia is shaped like an inverted truncated cone. The building’s facade was designed based on the image of a solemn salute. The entire diamond-shaped structure consists of a reinforced concrete shell. From the tops of the lower-level diamond modules, branches with smaller cross-sections extend upward, intersecting at higher elevations to create a magnificent pattern reminiscent of a rocket launch.
Thanks to the highly compact organization and development of the site and plot, this project maximizes the efficient use of land resources. The spaces between the steel beams of the building’s facade shell are filled with stainless steel mesh, giving the entire stadium a unique aesthetic appearance while also serving as a windbreak for spectator lounges and lobbies.
The design of the stadium takes into account the needs of people with mobility impairments. For example, it features 460 seats designated for people with disabilities, as well as high-sound-pressure-level speakers and a system that transmits audio signals to hearing aids to assist those with hearing impairments. For the visually impaired, high-contrast viewing screens and a system that transmits signals via the FM band are provided to enhance the viewing experience. A fully accessible pathway has also been established for people with disabilities.
