Project Overview
Wukesong Sports Hall is located at the northeast corner of Wukesong Bridge at the intersection of West Fourth Ring Road and Chang’an Avenue in Beijing. It is the ice sports venue for the Beijing Winter Olympics. Wukesong Sports Center can realize the conversion of ice hockey and basketball competition modes within 6 hours. It is the first venue in China to hold two professional sports events of basketball and ice hockey at the same time. The Wukesong Ice Sports Center, designed and constructed according to the ultra-low energy consumption building standards, will be used as an ice hockey training hall during the Beijing Winter Olympics.
Structural features
The Wukesong Sports Center has a construction area of ​​63,000 square meters and can accommodate 18,000 people. Among them, there is 1 underground floor and 6 floors above ground; the height is 27.86 meters. There are 47 private rooms, 10 sales points and two restaurants. There are a total of 18,000 spectator seats. After the 2008 Summer Olympics, it became a landmark venue for cultural and sports activities. In December 2020, the renovation project of the Wukesong Sports Center, the ice hockey venue for the Beijing Winter Olympics, was completed.
The roof of the main venue of Wukesong Sports Center adopts a two-way orthogonal variable height space steel truss structure. The supports between the columns are diagonal cross braces, with a horizontal spacing of 24 meters and a vertical height of 18.51 meters. There are 22 roof steel trusses at a distance of 12 meters. There are 7 types of truss sections. The height of the middle truss ranges from 6.3 to 9.3 meters. The side trusses are of equal section and the height is 6.3 meters. Box-shaped and H-shaped.
Amazing “Ice Linghua” exterior curtain wall design: The exterior facade of the Wukesong Ice Sports Center adopts a grille curtain wall system, which has both layered beauty and shading effect. The grille curtain wall is composed of 5 colors. Color distribution, positioning calculation and precise control are carried out through advanced technology. At night, colorful snowflake falling special effects can be realized, making people feel like walking into the “ice and snow world”.

Competition function
During the Beijing Winter Olympics, the Wukesong Sports Center will undertake part of the women’s ice hockey and men’s ice hockey competitions.
According to reports, in April last year, the Wukesong Sports Center started the renovation task, and in December of that year, the renovation project was completed. The renovation mainly includes the replacement of new ice-making units, and the design and reconstruction of functional rooms such as players’ locker rooms, doping testing rooms and laundry rooms.

Wukesong Sports Center creatively used the “ice dam” technology to change the original ice rink with a size of 30 meters by 60 meters into a 26 meters by 60 meters ice rink to meet the requirements of the Beijing Winter Olympics. The Song Sports Center will be able to switch the size of the ice dam as needed, and the venue will have a convertible ice rink with two sizes of 30m x 60m and 26m x 60m.
The Winter Olympics venue of Wukesong Sports Center uses a carbon dioxide transcritical direct cooling ice-making system to control the temperature difference between the ice surface within 0.5 degrees Celsius, so that the carbon emission is close to zero. The integrated cooling and heating design is used to recycle the cooling waste heat to help the Beijing Winter Olympics. Through the renovation, the Wukesong Sports Center realized the transition between the hockey rink and the basketball court for 6 hours.

The venue also focused on the transformation of the existing lighting facilities and display systems. 18 professional projectors were installed above the competition venue, and the ice surface was used as a screen to display the dynamic and shocking content on the ice surface in a three-dimensional manner. 88 beam lights, 84 cutting lights and fluorescent sticks work together. The indicators of the lighting system can reach the level of HDTV ultra-high-definition broadcast and meet the requirements of ultra-high-speed camera playback; the display screen meets the high-definition standard, with live synchronous live broadcast, wonderful moment capture, game information broadcast, timing score statistics, advertising broadcast and other functions , which greatly improves the viewing experience.
