Connection construction methods for steel buildings

The steel structure building connection construction mainly consists of three ways: rivet connection, welding, bolt connection.

1. Rivet connection

Rivet connection refers to the connection method of inserting rivets into the rivet holes and then riveting the holes together by applying pressure or heating, and the internal part of the member is pressurized by the shear of the rivets. The advantages of riveting are reliable force transmission, good shape and toughness. The disadvantage is that the rivet processing and manufacturing of steel consumption, riveting procedures are complex, and processing and manufacturing labor-intensive, limited bearing capacity, in the rivet hole will produce strong stress.

2. Welding technology

Welding is the most common connection form for basic steel structure components. Welding generally does not require splicing materials, saving steel and labor, saving materials; good sealing of the connection point, high rigidity; any shape of the structure can be connected by weld; welding construction is simple, automated operation can be realized, high production efficiency. Welding quality and welding technology has a close relationship. When the welding temperature is high, or due to improper stress treatment will form residual stress or deformation problems, there may also be cracks. Cold embrittlement at low temperatures is the most common problem in welding technology. The quality of the weld is easily affected by the material, therefore, the material properties of the steel are required to be high.

3. Bolt connection

Bolt connection is one of the main forms of steel structure connection method, and its application range is limited to a certain extent due to the complexity of the manufacturing, installation and heat treatment process, and the serious waste of materials in the manufacturing and installation process. Bolts are divided into ordinary bolts and high-strength bolts. Steel structure buildings with high requirements on the strength and stability of the overall structure often adopt high-strength bolt connection, and high-strength bolt connection is the main connection method of steel structure with welding. High-strength bolts are easy to construct and quick to start, which can accelerate the construction progress while guaranteeing the construction quality; at the same time, the transfer area of the connection force is larger, which greatly improves the stress situation, thus increasing the fatigue strength of the components; high-strength bolts will not loosen according to their own strong clamping force, which not only reduces the workload of the maintenance personnel, but also greatly improves the safety of the steel beams.


 

Due to the high technical requirements of steel structure welding for workers, high labor intensity, low assembly efficiency and difficult quality assurance. Therefore bolt connection becomes the main development direction of steel structure on-site assembly technology. The interconnection between steel structure building materials is an important content to be involved in steel structure building design. The choice of connection needs to be considered from various aspects: reasonable force, giving full play to the performance of the materials, reasonableness of the construction conditions, aesthetics, applicability and economy, etc.
